learn

Social media offers businesses, organizations and individuals a virtual treasure chest of opportunities to communicate, build community and save time and money on internal operations.

We now have access to tools that were only available to large corporations a couple of years ago.  These tools are rapidly becoming more powerful, more affordable and better designed.

Blockwork introduces the services and concepts that are shaping online activity - with a focus on how they can support your work.

Depending on your needs, workshop takeaways may include:

  • an overview of the concepts and tools that are shaping online services, focusing on resources for day-to-day business processes and new approaches to marketing
  • a deeper understanding of social media within the context of your industry or field
  • an understanding of tools you can start using immediately
  • a personal action plan with concrete, manageable next steps you can take to start incorporating social media into your projects and work processes
  • annotated, industry-specific references for continued exploration
  • a customized web space which enables participants to continue the discussion from the training and share what they've been exploring

The training is customized for a specific business, organization or community of practice.  It can run from one to two days.  Workshops include a follow-up conference call or meeting to address questions, discoveries and options that exist after you have a chance to think consider and implement ideas from the initial training.

We also offer a 3-hour "get your feet wet" basic training session, focusing on core social media concepts and examples.

plan

Blockwork can help you determine the most effective ways to apply social media to a project or process.  Or help you decide if it’s not the right set of tools for the job.

We’re interested in your ideas, your practice, your community and your stories.  We keep the focus on your goals, rather than the technology.

To help develop effective strategies we:

  • ask questions about your mission, business practices, projects and priorities
  • have conversations with stakeholders about how social media relates to their goals
  • identify tools and approaches that would support the work
  • develop benchmarks for evaluation
  • create demo examples to help with the decision-making process

do

We manage the process of turning your plan into a vibrant social space that engages, learns from and grows your community - both online and face-to-face.

We develop and manage budgets, timelines and teams (in-house or through contractors) to create, test, launch and get the word out about your work.  We craft simple guidelines for your staff and users.  Once the project is on its feet, we work with you to evaluate what’s effective and find ways to maximize its impact.

We also keep you updated about relevant technology developments and provide resources that simplify your ability to stay informed.

who

Since 1989, in various forms, my work has been about creating conversational and collaborative environments that facilitate learning and action.

I co-founded Walk & Squawk Performance Project and served as its Co-Artistic/ Producing director from 1994-2006. My hybrid approach to community building and social media draws from my work as a director, writer, teacher and producer. I've worked with partners from the commercial, non-profit, government and education sectors, creating community-centered art and civic dialogue projects that connect people across geographic and demographic boundaries.

I look at social media as an opportunity to facilitate engagement and participation that loops from online connections to face-to-face experience and back again, deepening community relationships and the exchange of ideas.  And I work to make the language of new technologies accessible to people who aren’t technologists.

comments from participants:

Thank you so much for your excellent presentation at DWN. I was overwhelmed by your creativity and intellect. Your presentation motivated me to re-evaluate new media ideas we had been struggling with as an organization.

Awesome!

Great idea for a workshop and very useful; both speakers were wonderful and together gave a good  contribution of information.

Loved it!  I’m very  inspired!

Fabulous!

social media in translation

  • Social media describes a new set of internet tools that enable shared community experiences, both online and in person.

A community, in this context, is a group of people with common interests who connect with one another to learn, play, work, organize and socialize.  Communities can be large or small, local or global.  They can be public or restricted to members.

Social media tools make it easier for those of us with basic computer skills to create and distribute our stories and discuss the things we care about. They can also help us filter and organize the overwhelming amount of information on the web.
